Artist Biography
Laurie Celine Balliett conveys her excitement about living in astounding places with her expressionistic Plein-air oil paintings. She works with palette knives, spatulas, and brushes to capture the immediacy of the environment. The wild New Mexico color and light among grand landscapes evoke her inspiration. Laurie began painting in college while studying environmental ethics and nature writing. In 2009 she visited Taos from Cape Cod for a two-week painting trip and stayed five months, painting daily with local plein-air artists. She moved to Taos permanently in 2013 while always returning to Cape Cod, where she lived for decades before moving to Taos. When not painting on location, she works from her memory of color, light, and emotion with her intuitive sense of color harmony, along with multiple references while painting from life. Her canvases present her passion for nature and wild places, while sometimes bringing in evidence of human existence. She is the third-great-granddaughter of the Hudson River School Painter, Jasper Francis Cropsey.
Laurie has exhibited in New Mexico, Colorado, and Massachusetts and her paintings hang on collectors’ walls throughout the United States and St. Maarten (Deutsch), and Canada. She grew up in Texas and Colorado, and as a child spent summers in West Cornwall, Connecticut. Before going to Mount Holyoke College, Laurie moved from Colorado to the art colony, Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Since then, she has lived in New Mexico, Vermont, Colorado, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts where she still returns to paint. In 2013 Laurie relocated to Taos, New Mexico where she finds solace in painting and writing.
