Artist Statement:

From the shores of Cape Cod, where she began her painting career, to the mountains, canyons, and rivers of Taos, Laurie’s plein-air and studio oil paintings present her passion for wild places both east and west. Her intuitive sense of color harmony and skillful use of impasto allows her to capture the exhilarating immediacy of iconic environments.

Laurie intends to transcend the direct experience of place and emotion into her expressionistic paintings. She is a third-great-granddaughter of the Hudson River School artist, Jasper Francis Cropsey, and like him, she sometimes includes evidence of human existence.

Laurie began painting in college while studying environmental ethics and nature writing. In 2009 she visited Taos for two weeks and stayed for five months, painting daily with local plein-air artists. She made Taos her permanent home in 2013. She grew up in Texas and Colorado and as a child spent summers in the Berkshire region of New England, near her extended family. Before putting herself through Mount Holyoke College and Graduate School at CSU, where she studied environmental ethics, she moved from Colorado to Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Since then, she has lived in New Mexico, Vermont, Colorado, and again in Massachusetts.

Laurie has exhibited in New Mexico, Colorado, and Massachusetts and her art hangs on collectors’ walls throughout the United States and the world. Her art is displayed at the Ammann Gallery in Taos, and prints and cards can be found at The Harwood Museum Gift shop.
